William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) North Platte was once the home of cowboy and showman William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Buffalo Bill was an early frontiersman , a famous Pony Express rider, Army scout and buffalo hunter. From 1868 to 1872, Cody served as a civilian scout for the Army fighting Indians in the west. Between campaigns, he served as a guide for several parties of buffalo hunters. Late in 1872, Cody began his long career as a showman with the "Wild West" shows. Early in 1883, Cody and others formed the "Wild West Circus" that toured the United States and parts of Europe. The show included a moch battle with Indians and a demonstration of Cody's shooting skill. Cody continued to perform until shortly before his death. North Platte was the original site of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and Rodeo. Buffalo Bill's ranch is the site of Scouts Rest Ranch built in 1878 by Cody. The ranch was used as a winter home for the Wild West Show troupe.
