Student Activities

Listed below are some activities that students can participate in that correspond to the historical sites being studied.

First, organize the students so that they can do the physical jogging at recess, before school, or at the beginning of physical education class..

Use colored coded tongue depressors to help keep track of distances covered for that day.

Students keep a log of their distances covered and give to the teacher at the end of the day.

Have a Nebraska map on the wall to keep track of mileage.

Wear a pedometer all day and see how far you walk in a day and compare how far one would walk on a pioneer trail per day.

Keep track of the number of illness and injuries of your class in a week and compare to deaths on the trail.

Participate in recreational activities the pioneers did on the trail ( square dancing, line dancing, two step, rope tricks, ect.)

Pony Express relay around school sending letters to other classrooms. Take turns sending homework assignments home in a saddlebag with students.

Make use of hiking trails to simulate the difficulty the pioneers had at walking on an underdeveloped trail.

Use orienteering, compasses, and astronomy to show how the pioneers figured out their directions.

Student pen-pals or e-mail pals.

At the end of the journey have the different classes meet each other at one of the historical sites to celebrate their successful completion of the project.
