Lt. John C. Fremont

" The Great Pathfinder "

Welcome to Fremont Nebraska. This city was named after Lieutenant John C. Fremont. In 1842, Lt. Fremont headed an exploring team that traveled the Platte Valley to Wyoming. His reports gave information about the Platte River route west. This information caused much interest in the East for this established the routes west to California and Oregon. Lt. Fremont has been called "The Great Pathfinder" for his efforts. He also suggested that the region he explored be named Nebraska, a name the Oto Indians used for the Platte River. In 1844, adopting Lt. Fremont's suggestion, Stephen Douglas introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to organize this vast territory to be called the Nebraska Territory.

Next stop is Columbus Nebraska. Fremont to Columbus is 47 miles. You are responsible for 24 miles of jogging. We will meet you there!

Fitness Reminder!

Each time your heart beats, it pushes blood through the arteries. You can feel this surge of blood. This surge of blood is called the pulse. You can feel your pulse on your neck and your wrist. To feel the pulse in your neck, put the tips of the first and second fingers of one hand over the Adam's apple and then slowly slide the fingers to one side of the neck just below the jaw. Press lightly. The carotid arteries, the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the brain, run on each side of the Adam's apple. The pulse can be felt each time the blood surges through the arteries. To feel the pulse in the wrist, put the first and second fingers of one hand on the inside of the other wrist about one inch below the base of the thumb and press lightly.

Once you can find your pulse, you can determine your heart rate. Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats in a minute. Count your pulses in either location for 10 seconds and then multiply by 6 to get your resting heart rate. Normal resting heart rate is between 70 and 90 beats per minute.
