Fort Kearny In 1848 the federal government established Fort Kearny along the Platte River. It was established to assist and protect the pioneers traveling the trails to the west. A number of trails from the east came together at Fort Kearny to form the "Great Platte River Road". This route became a part of the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails. Fort Kearny was the first important land mark west of the Missouri River. This fort served as a shopping and communications center for tens of thousands of overland travelers. Next stop will be Lexington Nebraska. It is 35 miles from Kearney to Lexington. Your jogging distance will be 17 miles. We'll meet you there! Kearney
