Fort Kearny

In 1848 the federal government established Fort Kearny along the Platte River. It was established to assist and protect the pioneers traveling the trails to the west. A number of trails from the east came together at Fort Kearny to form the "Great Platte River Road". This route became a part of the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails. Fort Kearny was the first important land mark west of the Missouri River. This fort served as a shopping and communications center for tens of thousands of overland travelers.
