The Platte River

The Platte River flows through Nebraska from the western boundary near Morrill to the Missouri River on the East for 485 miles. The Oto Indians described the Platte River as "flat water" which the name Nebraska comes from. The Platte River was the highway for the settlers to travel to reach their destinations in the west.

Platte River History Jog Instructions

We will begin our journey across Nebraska following the Platte River at Fort Atkinson on the east. Read about Fort Atkinsons history on the next page and start your students jogging the distance to the next stop at Fremont, Nebraska. The distance to Fremont is 37 miles. We will divide the distance between your school and Eagle Elementary School. Your classes responsibility will be for half of this distance and Eagle students will be responsible for the other half. When your class has finished their 18 miles please send me an e-mail that you have arrived at Fremont. Then I will contact you to tell you to continue our journey together to the next stop on the Platte River. Please refer to the teacher information page for ideas and tips for students to conduct the jogging . At the bottom of each page there will be physical fitness concepts and principles of training to be discussed with students before they start jogging. Now please go to the Fort Atkinson page to begin our journey. Good Luck!

Before students participate in the jogging, their medical status should be reviewed. Health problems should be considered prior to participation in any physical activity.

Fitness Reminder!

Before participating in a physical fitness activity, always remember to warm-up your muscles to help prevent injuries. After your workout, use cool-down exercises to let your heartbeat return to its normal rate.
