Welcome to Platte River History Jog.

The Nebraska Platte River History Jog is a interdisciplinary project using Nebraska history and physical fitness. There is a close relationship between physical health and mental health. Students who are fit not only receive the physical benefits, but are in better shape to learn in school. Since learning is the primary goal of education, it is extremely important that physical activity be an integral part of the overall curriculum. To assist in meeting this challenge, this project was developed.

Each year during the fall, we invite other schools to join our 4th graders in learning the history of the towns along the Platte river and at the same time become physically fit by jogging the distance of the Platte River. Students will also learn about important physical fitness concepts. We will start from the east side of Nebraska near Fort Atkinson (Omaha) and travel to Morrill on the west side (482 miles) following the Platte River. We would like to begin by October 1. If you are interested in participating, please send me an e-mail message. My e-mail address is listed at the bottom of this page.

The distance between each town will be divided by our school and your school. When your students have completed their distance to the next town, e-mail that you have arrived and I will keep a running total of miles. When you have arrived, please have your students learn about the historical significance of that town by going to that page. Students are not actually physically traveling to the different historical sites, but are learning about Nebraska's history, physical fitness, and becoming physically fit. For further instructions on this project go to the next page ( Platte River History Jog Instructions) and also look at the teacher information page.
